SNP protect Living Wage

Western Isles SNP were successful last Thursday in protecting the Living Wage.

The Council administration were hoping to put forward a motion to recognise that the Living Wage would be equal to a combination of the basic salary and Island Allowance.

SNP Councillor Gordon Murray stated:" We cannot negate the Island Allowance by implementing the Living Wage for the lowest paid. The Island Allowance is given in recognition of the the higher cost of living in these islands. We would be giving the Living Wage on one hand and taking away the Island Allowance on the other."

The proposal was successfully amended and a report will be coming to June's meeting on implementation.
