Our Islands Our Future ....where is the UK Government?

It is now over a month since the partnership between the Scottish Government and the three island councils unveiled the final results of the Our Islands Our Future project.

The major benefit was 100% revenues from the coastlines to be kept by the local authority - this was previously syphoned away from the economically fragile island communities to the UK Treasury. After a YES vote, the island councils will retain the revenues from their own coastlines.

Much island taxpayer's money was diverted from frontline services to pay for high powered meetings between the UK Government, Alistair Carmichael and island council leader Angus Campbell and Convenor Norman Macdonald where details were scant and although the council administration were questioned to provide detail on the discussions, there was nothing offered.

We await the UK government’s response and will see just how little the islands have to gain in the event of a no vote in September.
