Depopulation is on the menu

Decision-makers, public sector chiefs and senior councillors at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar are taking a unique approach to the serious of issue of the depopulation of the islands.

Since 2006 , meetings and seminars have been arranged at great public expense to address the worrying trend in depopulation threatening the very existence of these islands should trends continue.

Although there have been many discussions, focus groups and seminars, action has been very thin on the ground until now.

Action was served up in the shape of a publicly-funded dinner at a top restaurant in Stornoway for the ruling elite as they treat the business sector for an evenings feasting at the start of this week.

Western Isles SNP group are aghast at plans for the feast while the island is plagued with fuel poverty issues and lack of funding for key public services such as care.

"Surely this is a slap in the face to all those who are struggling with bills, worried about their future employment while those who make the decisions  affecting these islands gorge themselves at our expense. The islands need change and a vote for the SNP will deliver that change and put people first!"
