Smart meters roll out need to be prioritized in Hebrides

Stornoway North councillor Gordon Murray has written to SSE requesting that the Western Isles be given priority in the Smart Meter roll out.

Recognising the value of addressing fuel poverty that a smart meter has, Councillor Murray said:

“With the high levels of fuel poverty in our local authority increasing in the last four years from 50% to 71% - levels which are unacceptable in our society, there is an urgent need for coordinated action involving National and Local politicians and stakeholders in the energy market.

Energy suppliers hold a critical position as they have the primary relationship with consumers.  In this context can I firstly ask if you would prioritise the installation of smart meters into every household in the Western Isles?

Smart meters would help the most vulnerable households in the Western Isles regulate energy use and go some way to reducing bills.”

Councillor Murray has also raised the concerns of Stornoway constituents who have been told that Smart Meters will not be installed on LPG systems.

Councillor Murray said:

“Angus Macneil MP has confirmed that he will write to the UK Government’s Department of Energy and Climate Change and to Ofgem, to see what can be done to help LPG customers access Smart Meters.”
