SNP WELCOME McCLUSKEY COMMENTS ON REFERENDUM AND GRANGEMOUTH

Comments from the leader of the UK’s largest trade union warming to the case for a Yes vote in the independence referendum have today been welcomed by the SNP.

Len McCluskey, the leader of Unite, also praised First Minister Alex Salmond’s “sensitive and understanding” role in the saving of Grangemouth oil refinery and told the Daily Record that the case for a Yes vote: “is a seductive argument.”

He added: “There’s no doubt at the moment that there’s a perception in some people’s eye – and in many of our members – that the SNP are more radical than Labour.”

Christina McKelvie MSP, convener of the SNP Parliamentary Trade Union Group, said:
“Len McCluskey’s open-minded views on the forthcoming referendum are very welcome, and will be of interest to many trade union members across Scotland as they decide how to vote next year.

“Like many people – myself included - the Unite leader is looking forward to reading the Scottish Government’s White Paper, which will set out the compelling case for a Yes vote and a fairer Scotland.

“He is correct to say the coming months will be a challenge to Labour and Johann Lamont, who have so far failed to spell out a positive vision for the future of this country.

“Only a Yes vote can create a Scotland where workers rights are protected and all the people of Scotland can thrive in a fairer and more prosperous country.”
