It has emerged that Western Isles Council, Leader Cllr Angus Campbell, has instructed its Chief Executive to investigate if Public Officials have travelled from Stornoway to Barra via flights through Glasgow.
In his panic to avoid blame (as has become his administration's trade mark) for dismantling Hebrides air transport, with such dramatic knock-on consequences, including newspaper delivery. The Council political administration's Leader has it seems, forgotten to ask the most basis question; Is it now more cost effective to divert through one of Scotland's main cities in order to do business throughout the Outer Hebrides? Instead he asks only that what he describes as the "serious" accusation of travelling this way, might actually have been done.
For his information and that of the Chief Executive; at a recent, very well attended, public meeting in Castlebay Community School, Barra, a member of the community asked of the attending officials how they travelled to the meeting. They responded easily and properly that they had flown via Glasgow, as it was now the most efficient and effective use of their time.
Had the Cllr asked this simple and obvious question he might have saved himself everyone a great deal of time.
Donald Manford.
