Letter to HIAL regarding ATC centralisation

Dear Mr Lyon,

It is with much disappointment to read of HIAL’s plans to centralize the Air Traffic Control services by using “remote” towers and also the downgrading of the services at Benebcula Airport.

We would ask you, Mr Lyon, to review this latest strategy as it will have a detrimental effect on the islands in terms of jobs.

In past strategic plans, you correctly highlight that the importance  of HIAL airports and the services which “ directly contribute to economic prosperity and the sustainability of our communities, particularly in remoter regions”. You also state a commitment to “working in partnership with airlines and stakeholders to develop air routes and services while identifying and pursuing new commercial opportunities to maximise the wider socio-economic benefits provided by our airports.” This move is contrary to these commitments.

Therefore, the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar SNP Group would urge you to review your decision with your own strategic commitments in mind and reverse this decision which will have a devastating effect on our communities. As councillors, our main challenge is the depopulation of our islands and so we would urge HIAL to continue in being an positive contributor to our islands rather than been seen as an agent of depopulation,

Yours sincerely,

Cllr Gordon Murray

Leader, CnES SNP Group
