SNP Comhairle Group leader, Cllr Gordon Murray, has hailed the new Innovation Centre at Lews Castle College as a key player in shaping the future of the islands.
The Innovation Centre opened earlier this year offering training, advice and development facilities for the use of modern high technology and for people who would like to start their own business.
Cllr Murray has written to Dr Ann Murray, Assistant Principal of Lews Castle College, to congratulate the team on the opening of the new centre.
He said this type of investment was vital for securing a vibrant knowledge economy for the Outer Hebrides.
In his letter he states: “The value of innovation to the economic vitality and adaptability of a region is recognised at EU, national and regional level. Innovation is a fundamental driver of long-term competitiveness and sustainable growth. The development of the knowledge economy is also a key focus in economic strategies for the Outer Hebrides and within the Scottish Government’s economic strategy.”
He continued: “A vibrant knowledge economy in the Outer Hebrides could bring a number of social and economic benefits to the islands, fitting well with a number of strategic requirements in respect of addressing population decline and an ageing population, developing a diverse economic base and increasing average earnings. Innovation could also support transformation in public service delivery across areas such as health, social care and education.”
